Warren Buffett donated 524 shares of class B common stock in Berkshire Hathaway to a student-run newspaper at the University of Nebraska, CNBC reports. At the close of trading July 16, the shares were worth a total of $100,608.
Buffett got a bachelor’s of science degree from the university.
The shares come as The Daily Nebraskan, with 150 student reporters and editors, was undergoing a fund-raising campaign. The paper had survived off student fees and advertising, but was seeking other sources, according to CNBC. Donations will go through the University of Nebraska Foundation.
"We created this fund to basically guarantee The Daily Nebraskan will always exist, will always have at least a senior staff in place," General Manager Dan Shattil said.
Berkshire Hathaway subsidiary BH Media Group owns 31 daily local newspapers.
