Subject: Volunteer Opportunities

We are currently recruiting employee volunteers to assist with outreach activities for the Los Angeles Times Family Fund and Reading by 9. We hope you'll take this opportunity to get involved and give back to the communities we serve.

Volunteer for the Grant Review Committee
The Los Angeles Times Family Fund, a fund of the McCormick Tribune Foundation, is a key supporter of improving the lives of disadvantaged children and youth, providing more than $3.5 million in 2007 to approximately 120 nonprofit agencies in Southern California . Employee volunteers are needed to serve on the Family Fund's employee grant review committee. During a two-year term, committee members review nonprofit grant proposals, conduct site visits, and make funding recommendations to the McCormick Tribune Foundation for the Summer Camp and Holiday Campaigns. The membership application deadline is Sept. 21. For more information, call Catalina Salazar, ext. 75771. Click here for an overview and volunteer application.

Help Change a Child's Life for Good
Two out of three Southern California third-grade students cannot read at grade level. Research shows that children who can't read by age 9 rarely catch up and encounter difficulties throughout adulthood. Help change that by volunteering to read aloud in a classroom for a half hour or tutor two children for an hour each week in kindergarten through third grade classrooms. For more information, contact Donna Sloan, ext. 73969. Click here for an overview and volunteer application.

Dozens of Times employees have already experienced the many rewards of participating in these volunteer programs. Please think about the tremendous impact you can have on a child and on our community by giving just a little of your time.

Thank you.
Kim McCleary La France
